None of this is mine — it happened before I was born — and all of it is mine, because the family wrote it down. Four lineage books, kept for a century and a half: a distributed ledger on paper, each generation extending and correcting the last. The line they record runs through Cromwell, who sheltered the club that became the Royal Society; through a grandfather Fred Terman recruited to the lab at the center of the nascent Silicon Valley; through another who invented SaaS in a basement in 1975; through my mother in Heidelberg, where Bavarian nobility dueled over her attention and she met Elvis.
And it ends where my own story starts: March 1965, my father folded into a two-seat car with three friends, driving 2,300 miles without stopping to walk at the front of Dr King's march with a camera. He left his church for twenty-five years over its caution on race. That is the inheritance — not the descent, which the arithmetic makes nearly universal and genetically nearly empty, but the obligations the books transmitted. This architecture is my attempt to build what my family ran on paper.
