Jonathan Hare's paternal-line grandmother by his mother's father's first marriage — called simply Grandma, where June was Grandma June. She held a Master of Fine Arts from UC Berkeley, which with her husband's scientific standing is what made the family's move to Berkeley straightforward.
She lived in a trailer in Three Rivers, just below the entrance to Sequoia National Park — which Hare has described as a better place to grow up than any of the houses his Stanford classmates were raised in. He read thousands of books there.

The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.
She once rode all the way down the mountain in an actual canoe on one of the log flumes built to bring timber down from the Sequoia groves to Three Rivers. They were still operational into the 1950s.
