Somebody has to author the genome
This is Jonathan Hare's account, with its provenance shown. The person or organization named has not yet claimed or corrected it.
The Quantum Genome is the complete framework of governance content any resource can inherit. Something has to author it first — and a genome that cannot be inspected is a black box asking to be trusted.
Jonathan Hare's answer is that the seed content is one person's actual formation, published with provenance so it can be examined rather than trusted. That is what the record on this site is for, beneath everything else it does.
This page carries part of the argument of the Consilient Manifesto — the universal call to action — and the way back to the call is one click.
Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.
The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.
Hard-won empathy, radical honesty and resilience, mapped into the proto-genome; and Humanity, Nature and Freedom acting as the protocol's structural equivalent of a mothering instinct. The reasoning is Hinton's: the people currently building these systems are selected for a disposition that is not caring, so caring has to be embedded structurally rather than assumed.
The family ledger's arithmetic is a working model of the Quantum Genome Governance design, and the mapping is exact rather than poetic. Population genetics shows one fully connected graph — go back far enough and everyone descends from everyone — while any specific inheritance is probabilistic: an individual line loses a particular gene within a few centuries, but the population retains it through other branches. And communities that preferentially marry within — noble houses, closed denominations — hold their inheritance coherent longer, without ever leaving the shared graph.
Now read the same three facts as governance. The network is one connected substrate: no faith or culture stands outside it. Governance content — obligations, ethical constraints, Trust Taxonomies — is inherited the way genes are: carried by resources, passed to what derives from them, subject to selection, with no guarantee any single line preserves any single principle, and no need for one, because reuse across many branches is what keeps a principle alive. And each community is the governance analogue of an endogamous line: it keeps its own Genome coherent — Adventist, Quaker, or any other tradition's moral weights — through dense internal reuse, while remaining fully connected to everyone else on the substrate. Coexistence is not negotiated; it is structural — diverse populations with diverse religious and cultural orientations each maintain their inheritance, selection favors what gets reused, and convergence emerges through the economic gradient rather than through anyone's surrender. That is the unification essay's claim restated in the ledger's oldest vocabulary: the individual line forgets, the population remembers, and the graph holds everyone.
There is no single root. This is one view of the graph, from this node — what you see depends on where you enter and what you are looking for.
