Cromwell, Newton, and the milled edge, 1653–1727
A boy spent his childhood reading the history of science — the personal lives of Euclid, Archimedes, Newton, Riemann, Einstein — out of a complete run of National Geographic in a cold room at the back of his grandmother's studio, and out of a library he read to the end. He also grew up knowing, because three family books recorded it, that his line ran back to Oliver Cromwell. What nobody told him was that these were the same story. The institution at the center of the Scientific Revolution existed because of an appointment his own ancestor made.
Hare has read the history of mathematics and science as biography since he was a child — the Greeks forward, with a particular attachment to Newton, who did the physics and then went and rebuilt the money. He also grew up inside a family that recorded its descent from Cromwell in a book updated every generation.
The two facts sat in separate compartments for fifty years. Cromwell was ancestry — a name in a ledger. The Royal Society was history — something read about in the cold room. That his ancestor's patronage of a brother-in-law at Oxford is what sheltered the men who founded the institution Newton would run was not a connection he had made, and it is not one the family record makes either.
It matters here for a reason beyond coincidence. The pattern he found when he did connect them — a temporary authority sheltering a network meant to outlast it, and an engineer who fixed a system by changing its substrate rather than its rules — is the pattern he had already spent thirty years building toward from the other end.
This architecture's central claim is that guarantees placed in an authority fail when Jonathan Hareity weakens, and guarantees placed in the substrate do not. That claim has a seventeenth-century proof: Newton did not make clipping more illegal, he made it impossible to conceal. The Quantum Genome is the same move, applied to obligation instead of silver.
Newton did not stop coin-clipping by prosecuting clippers, though he did plenty of that. He stopped it by putting a reeded edge on the coin, so that a clipped coin was instantly and unarguably clipped. That is the entire argument for structural rather than contractual enforcement, demonstrated in silver three hundred years before this architecture proposed it for governance.
The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.
Hare grew up knowing his line ran to Cromwell, and separately spent his childhood reading the history of science. Nobody had told him the two were the same story.
Cromwell's authority was transitional by title, and the network it sheltered outlived both his regime and his family.
The Royal Society survived a change of sponsor because its value was never located in the sponsor.
Newton solved a currency crisis by changing the object rather than the penalty — a clipped coin announces itself, and no authority is needed to check.
Every coordination system in this record, from Rome forward, has failed by placing its guarantee in a person or an office. That is the failure the architecture removes.
One element of the lineage was corroborated by a legitimate Orange descendant, in front of witnesses who are alive and reachable — and his name is recoverable from Index Ventures' records.
Cromwell appointed his brother-in-law John Wilkins — married to his sister Robina in 1656 — as Warden of Wadham College, Oxford. It was ordinary patronage. What it produced was not.
Under that political cover Wilkins convened an experimental club: Boyle, Wren, Hooke, and others who needed somewhere to argue about natural philosophy while the country was tearing itself apart. The shelter was the point. They did not need money or endorsement. They needed a room where the argument was not also a political act.
It is worth being exact about the chain, because the usual telling compresses it into coincidence.
Cromwell appointed John Wilkins — married to his sister Robina in 1656 — as Warden of Wadham College, Oxford. Wilkins used the political cover that came with it to convene an experimental club. The membership is the point: Robert Boyle, whose law and whose insistence on published, repeatable experiment is where modern chemistry begins. Christopher Wren, an astronomer before he was an architect. Robert Hooke, who would name the cell, formulate the law of elasticity, and spend decades quarrelling with Newton.
That club is the Royal Society in embryo. When the Restoration purged them from Oxford in 1660 they reassembled in London, met at Gresham College, and took a charter from Charles II in 1662. Within forty years Newton was its president.
So the institution that formalized the Scientific Revolution in England — peer review, published transactions, the norm that a claim is not knowledge until others have reproduced it — grew inside a shelter that Oliver Cromwell created by giving his brother-in-law a job.
These are the men whose lives I read as a boy, in a cold room full of magazines, without knowing that one of the names in my own family's ledger was the reason they had a room of their own to argue in.
Cromwell died in 1658. His son Richard held the protectorate for months. The monarchy returned in 1660 and the Puritan-aligned academics were stripped of their positions.
They went to London, met at Gresham College, and sought a charter from Charles II — partly to insulate themselves from their own history. In 1660 the Royal Society was founded; in 1662 it was chartered by the king whose father the sponsors' patron had helped depose.
The institution survived the transition because it had never actually belonged to Cromwell. He had only made the room available.
Isaac Newton was born in 1643 and was a schoolboy throughout the protectorate — too young for the war, in Lincolnshire, at The King's School in Grantham. He reached Trinity College Cambridge in 1661, the year after the Restoration.
The gravitation work came later, in the plague years of 1665–66, when Cambridge closed and he went home to Woolsthorpe. Oliver Cromwell had been dead seven years by then. Richard Cromwell was thirty-nine and in exile, and would outlive the publication of the Principia by twenty-five years.
Newton became Warden and then Master of the Royal Mint in 1696 and treated it as an engineering assignment. The problem was clipping: silver coins were being shaved at the rim and the shavings kept, which drained value out of every transaction in the kingdom.
Clipping was already a capital offense. The penalty was not the constraint — detection was. A clipped coin looked like a coin, and verifying one required weighing it against a standard, which nobody does at the point of every purchase.
Newton's answer was the milled edge: a fine reeding around the rim, applied at striking. After that a clipped coin was visibly clipped, by anybody, instantly, at no cost. He also pursued counterfeiters with famous ferocity — but the milling is the part that scaled, precisely because it did not depend on him.
Newton spent decades on alchemy, which is usually filed as the embarrassing part. It reads differently alongside the Mint work. Transmutation and monetary reform are the same question asked twice: what makes a thing worth what it is worth, and can that be changed deliberately?
He answered it in the second domain and not the first. But a man who unified the physical laws of the universe and then went to work on the money was not changing subjects.
I descend from Cromwell by family record — a Seventh-day Adventist genealogical tradition of searching church records and publishing a volume, updated roughly every twenty years, recording who begat whom as far back as documents allow. The line is said to run through William of Orange and Mary, to Cromwell, and back to Charlemagne.
Two caveats belong with it and are kept rather than removed. Descent from Charlemagne is close to universal among people of European ancestry, for arithmetic reasons. And Cromwell's legitimate male line ended, so any descent runs through a daughter and would need a document to confirm.
The claim being made here is not that the ancestry confers anything. It is that the Ledger which recorded it is itself a distributed, community-maintained, periodically-versioned provenance system — and I grew up inside one without noticing, then spent thirty years building another.
There is one piece of the lineage that was corroborated by someone with standing to know, and it happened in a room with the portrait in it.
On a European fundraising roadshow for Evolve organized by Index Ventures, one stop was a royal chalet in the Netherlands, lent for the evening by its owner — a legitimate descendant of the House of Orange, who invested a million dollars of the round himself. Roughly twenty prospective investors attended. A fifteen-foot painting of the Prince on a rearing horse hung on the wall.
I mentioned the family line in my pitch. The host said: “Oh, then we are family!” Afterwards, alone, I told him the descent was illegitimate. He replied that I was in good company — their ancestor had been very prolific.
I have told that story hundreds of times since, and I regard it as my best claim to royalty. Not a document: a legitimate descendant, under the portrait, saying we.
And it is recoverable. Giuseppe Zocco of Index Ventures was on that segment. Ralph Clark, Evolve's chief financial officer, organized the roadshow and was present. The host invested a million dollars, so Index will have his name in their records — and he was in all likelihood a client of Index Securities, the Rimer family brokerage the firm grew out of. A protector holds authority that is supposed to expire, and shelters something meant to outlast him. An engineer inherits the institution and fixes the money by changing the coin rather than the law. Four centuries later the same shape recurs: a transitional signing authority that covers launch agreements only, expires on deployment, and cannot distribute value to its holder — protecting a network until protocol-enforced settlement makes the protection unnecessary. The milled edge is the whole argument in one object. Move the guarantee into the substrate and you no longer need anyone to be watching.
