Temporary authority, used to incubate something meant to outlive it
This is Jonathan Hare's account, with its provenance shown. The person or organization named has not yet claimed or corrected it.
Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland from December 1653 until his death in September 1658. An ancestor of Jonathan Hare's by family record.
He is in this graph for a structural reason rather than a sentimental one. Cromwell held the realm together by force of personality and force of arms, under a title that was explicitly transitional — protector, not king. And in the course of it he created, more or less by accident, the conditions for a scientific institution that outlived his regime, his family, and his reputation.
Correction, 30 August 2026, published rather than silently applied (S-146): the family descent runs not to the Lord Protector but to Sir Oliver Cromwell of Hinchingbrooke, his Royalist uncle — the knight who hosted kings while his nephew unmade one. The earlier daughter-line caveat retires with the correction, and the family lands, by its own books, on the Royalist side of the century's argument. The Protector remains this page's anchor as the name history kept — and the announced title in the record's own transcript ledger (S-130) reads correctly against the uncle's line.
Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.
The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.
Cromwell appointed his brother-in-law John Wilkins — who married his sister Robina — as Warden of Wadham College, Oxford. Under that political protection Wilkins convened an experimental science club that gave Boyle, Wren and Hooke somewhere to work while the country tore itself apart.
When the monarchy was restored in 1660 those men lost their university posts, moved to London, met at Gresham College, and sought the patronage of the new king to avoid being read as Cromwellian subversives. That became the Royal Society.
A transitional authority, held by one person, used to shield a network until it was strong enough to survive without him — and then superseded.
That is the exact shape of the signing authority Hare holds today: deliberately narrow, covering launch agreements only, expiring on deployment, and unable to distribute value to anyone including its holder. The point of a protector is that the thing protected is supposed to outlast the protection. Cromwell's did. His own regime did not.
William and John Cromwell arrived in Maryland around 1667–71 and settled Baltimore County. William held positions under the Lord Proprietor, Cecil Calvert, and the family became dominant in South Patapsco — what is now Brooklyn and Curtis Bay in Baltimore. That matches the family account that a branch was given a substantial part of what became Baltimore.
On the descent itself, the family's own testimony is instructive. A nineteenth-century descendant, Richard Cromwell (1807–1890), told the Baltimore Sun the family was not directly descended from the Lord Protector. But the arms on the family silver brought from England matched those of Sir Oliver Cromwell, the Lord Protector's uncle, of the Cromwell-Williams line — and by 1675 Sir Oliver's descendants had lost all their English lands, with the Maryland arrivals landing just before.
Which suggests collateral kinship through the Cromwell-Williams line rather than direct descent: a gentry family losing its estates and sending sons to the Chesapeake. That is a checkable claim, and a more interesting one than the version usually told.
