One party, several calls, a Santa Fe trip that never happened
This is Jonathan Hare's account, with its provenance shown. The person or organization named has not yet claimed or corrected it.
Daughter of Robert Maxwell, whom Jonathan Hare understood to have been an early funder of the Santa Fe Institute — the stated reason he regarded her as worth knowing. Subsequently convicted of sex trafficking offenses and imprisoned.
This entry exists because Hare met her, recorded the encounter, and holds that a record published before anyone else constructs a version is worth more than a silence. It is not an outreach target and no relationship is claimed beyond what is recorded below.
S-090 adds what the famous photograph interrupted: her conversation with Hare that evening was about the Santa Fe Institute, and about meeting in Santa Fe to admire the stars from the communal hot tub at Ten Thousand Waves, the Japanese mountain spa above the town — with, Hare notes for the record's readers, very high-end rooms; you should visit. The picture he grades as routine, perfunctory and absolutely meaningless took thirty seconds of a two-hundred-person party; the conversation is what he remembers.
Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.
The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.
They met at a Halloween party at the Hudson Hotel, introduced by an entertainment agent who had grown bored of hearing about Consilient and the Santa Fe Institute. She knew the physicists Hare cared about and struck him as unusually well studied. She introduced him to Prince Andrew. They agreed to meet again in Santa Fe, to spend time around the Institute and at 10,000 Waves; she mentioned a place outside town and offered it. They spoke several times trying to find a date, never found one, and in 2001 she stopped replying.
Hare records, unprompted, that Jeffrey Epstein was never mentioned and that he would not have recognized the name at the time.
She wrote her name and mobile number on a cocktail napkin, which Hare still has. That is how they stayed in contact through the following months while trying to arrange the Santa Fe meeting that never happened.
The party has since been documented in the press, and photographs from the party show her in exactly the costume Hare described from memory a quarter of a century later. It corroborates that he was there and that he remembers it accurately. It corroborates nothing else, and this record does not suggest otherwise.
Nothing, in the sense usually meant. We are never going to know what happened. Epstein is dead. Murray Gell-Mann, who appears elsewhere in this record for entirely different reasons, is dead. Maxwell is serving twenty years and has had, by any account, a hard life.
Hare's position is that the public appetite for relitigating cases like this is the opiate of the masses in Marx's precise sense — a distraction that feels like moral seriousness. Millions are trafficked every year and the systems permitting it are largely untouched, because they are boring, structural, and offer nobody a chance to be publicly appalled.
The alternative he proposes →: a substrate where reputation accrues without disclosure, nobody has to judge a stranger, and the short list of genuinely excluded things — murder, child sex trafficking, destroying the environment for profit — is not prohibited but unavailable.
A contact-manager entry from the time of the party, surfaced in 2026, adds what the distilled account could not: the introduction chain is named and, with source record S-054, ordered: Pam Alexander introduced Hare to Jason Weinberg; Weinberg introduced him to Loree Rodkin — recorded contemporaneously as 'Laura' and 'Laurie', the name corrected in S-054; and Rodkin, hearing Hare talk about the Santa Fe Institute, said he should meet Maxwell, who spent a lot of time there. S-010 had recalled only an unnamed entertainment agent. It records, at the time, her house in Santa Fe, her friendship with Murray Gell-Mann, and that she hung out at the Santa Fe Institute — the substance of why Hare thought her worth knowing, written down before any of it mattered.
Its most telling feature is a confusion. The entry spells her name three ways — Gheisla, Guislaine, Ghiesla — and records that a colleague, Ed, knew a 'Guislaine Maxwell' who might be Gheisla's sister. The person who wrote this had just met her and did not know who she was. A fabricated record would not contain that mistake; a contemporaneous one would, and does. What the entry proves is limited and stated: what Hare knew and did not know in 2000. It proves nothing about anything that came later.
