Jonathan Hare met Melania Knauss — now Melania Trump — at Heidi Klum's Halloween party, introduced by Ghislaine Maxwell, who introduced him to many people that evening. The theme that year was pimps and prostitutes, and Melania and Donald J. Trump were among the only guests not in costume. Hare took no particular notice of her beyond a starlet or model standing with Trump — and his retrospective accounting is the page's honest comedy: at that party she registered as no better than average beauty, which means she is an absolute knock-out; the room's baseline was the distortion. He knew better than to flirt with a woman standing with Donald Trump, and — knowing nothing about real-estate development — he moved on. Had he known the man would become President and she his wife of twenty-plus years, he says, he would have stayed and actually talked to them.

She appears in this record twice, and both times in her defense. Here, as a person met and unremarkable only by the standards of an absurd room; and on Olchi Skant's page, where Hare's account of the EB-1 — the Einstein visa she held, the same class his friend Narry Singh held — closes with his verdict on the rumor industry around her immigration: probably half false and half true, and people should leave Melania alone. The famous photograph of Maxwell, Trump and Melania that resurfaced twenty years later is part of the same evening's record; Hare's absence from the society photographs is a thread the source preserves with its explanation garbled mid-sentence, and the ask is filed. His broader verdict on the whole retrospective industry is the source record's thesis: focus on your own morality, and stop judging everyone else's.

Because in 2000 nobody shot parties with phones, and the wandering society photographers — paparazzi for the wealthy but not actually that famous — photographed only the people they recognized: Maxwell and Trump, with the third figure registering as nothing more than Trump's latest model companion. Hare stood off to the left, out of frame, waiting for Ghislaine to finish what he grades as a routine, perfunctory, absolutely meaningless picture at a party of two hundred people — so they could finish their conversation about the Santa Fe Institute, and about meeting there to admire the stars from the communal hot tub at Ten Thousand Waves. The era's most re-litigated photograph, dated from its left edge: just outside the frame, the subject was complexity science and stargazing.
