Loree Rodkin, who introduced me to Ghislaine Maxwell over talk of the Santa Fe Institute

Manager turned jewelry designer — Brad Pitt and the early Robert Downey Jr, then custom pieces for celebrities. The Maxwell introduction was hers.

About this entry

This is Jonathan Hare's account, with its provenance shown. The person or organization named has not yet claimed or corrected it.

Person

Who this is

By the time Jonathan Hare met her at Heidi Klum's Halloween party in October 2000, Loree Rodkin was mostly a high-end jewelry designer making custom pieces for celebrities. Before that she had been a manager — Brad Pitt for a time, and Robert Downey Jr in his early years, well before Iron Man. Hare's contemporaneous contact entries record her as 'Laura' and 'Laurie'; the name is corrected here and the correction is published in source record S-054.

She is the missing link in the Maxwell chain: Hare was telling her about the Santa Fe Institute, and she said he should meet Ghislaine Maxwell, because Maxwell spent a lot of time there. The friendship outlasted the party — dinner in San Francisco a few months later, and years of contact after.

Where this intersects the work

Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.

The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.

October 2000

The introduction that mattered

At the party, Hare talked about the Santa Fe Institute — as, by every account including his own, he talked about it to everyone. Rodkin's response was an introduction: you should meet Ghislaine Maxwell, she spends a lot of time there. The contemporaneous contact entry records her 'coming to SF in early December, staying at Sherman House.' The friendship began, Hare records, partly because she knew Christy Turlington, whom he spent several years admiring from an impractical distance.

Dinner in San Francisco, and Sherman House

They had dinner when she came to San Francisco. She stayed at Sherman House, the tiny five-star boutique hotel a block and a half from Hare's house on Steiner Street — a place with private entrances where people could come and go unseen. It was Bill Gates's primary place to stay in San Francisco in those days, or so she told him; the claim is hers, recorded as recalled.

Why she stopped managing Robert Downey Jr

She told Hare that Downey was amazing and extremely talented, and that she ultimately had to drop him as a client 'because I got tired of lying about his drug problems every time he got arrested.' The arrests are public record of that era, and Downey has spoken of those years himself, at length; the quotation is her stated reason as Hare recalls it, published as such.
