The Moby concert: wedged between Christy Turlington and Heidi Klum, jumping in unison

A small balcony in a very small venue, October 2000 — where the Klum thread begins, and the party invitation came from

Event

What this is

The week of Heidi Klum's Halloween party, Jonathan Hare was in the VIP section of a Moby concert in Manhattan — a small balcony in a very small venue, crammed enough that dancing meant jumping in unison. Christy Turlington stood in front of him, Heidi Klum right behind. The VIP tickets came from Hare's sister Cassidy Arkin, who knew Moby well from her years across MTV, VH1, ABC and BET; she made the Klum introduction, and the party invitation followed from it. Everything the record holds about that party — Maxwell, Prince Andrew, the napkin — runs through this balcony.

Where this intersects the work

Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.

The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.

Why he was there, and what happened instead

Turlington was, in Hare's words, the dream girl of hundreds of millions of people — one of the top four supermodels — and the difference was that he actually thought he had a shot. Friends had passed word that she and Jason Patric had broken up — which is why he wanted to be there; the tickets themselves came from Cassidy, who knew Moby well. He nearly passed out; he had dreamed of the moment for years. The problem was physics: she faced the stage, the venue was too loud to be heard in, and beyond the introductions at the door there was no establishing eye contact. Klum was behind him. So he turned around and talked with her instead — and the party invitation, and everything downstream of it, followed from that turn.

Help being cool

Hare records, for the avoidance of any doubt, that he had a lot of help being cool. A style consultant to celebrities did her best with him, up to and including taking him shopping. Doormen at the top clubs would let him in — and then literally adjust his clothes and make him hide his electronic devices before he went through. You can't look like a nerd, the record notes in his words, when you're watching a private performance by famous hip-hop stars. The scene admitted him; it just dressed him first.
