Heidi Klum asked me at her own party whether I recognized her

Whose party it was — and who was unrecognizable at her own door

About this entry

This is Jonathan Hare's account, with its provenance shown. The person or organization named has not yet claimed or corrected it.

Person

Who this is

Model and television producer, whose annual Halloween party is among the more elaborate fixtures of the New York calendar. Jonathan Hare met her at a Moby concert in Manhattan the same week, through his sister Cassidy Arkin, and she invited him to the party at the Hudson Hotel.

Where this intersects the work

Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.

The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.

October 2000

The concert, and the turn

On the balcony at the Moby concert, wedged between Turlington and Klum and jumping in unison because dancing was otherwise impossible, Hare could not talk to the woman he had come for — she faced the stage, and the venue swallowed voices. Klum was behind him, so he turned around. She was very nice and approachable, exactly as she seems on television. Hare's assessment, marked as his: the nicest celebrity he has ever met — a kind heart, not faking anything. Her then husband — the one before Seal, as Hare puts it — was there and didn't mind them talking; he was absorbing the music.

“You don't recognize me, do you?”

A tall woman in a dominatrix costume and mask came over to thank him for coming. They talked for a while, scanning the room for people worth meeting, until she asked whether he recognized her. He did not. It was Heidi. They both found it funny.

The theme was pimps and prostitutes. Hare had packed light and went as James Bond, meaning a dark suit — which made him and Adam Dell about the only two men there not in costume.
