The dream girl of hundreds of millions; the difference here was the NYU-and-Buddhism part, and an introduction at a door that never became a second one

One of the top four supermodels of the era, and the motive force behind a surprising amount of this record: the Loree Rodkin friendship began because Rodkin knew her; the Kabbalah Centre attendance was on the chance she'd be there; and Jonathan Hare was on the balcony at the Moby concert — the balcony that produced Heidi Klum, the Halloween party, and everything downstream — because friends had passed word that she and Jason Patric had broken up.
What made her the dream girl, in Hare's account, was not the part shared with every other model: it was that she was intellectual and Buddhist, enrolled at NYU studying in the neighborhood of philosophy and Eastern religion. He states plainly that he had no expectation of dating her — that if someone is your dream girl, you just want to know her, and that he knew they would be lifelong friends if they ever properly met. They were introduced once, at the door of a VIP balcony, and never again: for the rest of the concert she faced the stage.
The thread has an ending, delivered by one of her friends who had been working the introduction: Turlington was in a serious relationship with Ed Burns — whom she later married, on the public record — and it was Burns who had encouraged her toward NYU and away from the celebrity fashion crowd. The friend's verdict, quoted: Hare had actually fallen in love with Ed Burns. Hare publishes the line at his own expense, which is the record's way.

For years the first thing Hare asked anyone in the entertainment or fashion world was: do you know Christy Turlington? Everyone he knew knew about it. Two of her friends attempted setups — Hare's own suspicion being that they had crushes on him themselves. He attended Kabbalah Centre meetings on the chance she'd be there; she didn't attend those particular ones, though Madonna did. Then one of the friends told him about Ed Burns, and what Burns had encouraged in her — the NYU part, the very part Hare was drawn to — and delivered the line above. The record claims nothing about Turlington beyond the public facts and Hare's account of his own conduct, and it notes that she may never have known any of this was happening.
The two friends are described here so they can recognize themselves, and for no other reason: one Swedish, living on the Upper East Side not far from the Plaza; the other a style consultant to celebrities — amazingly cool, in Hare's words, and she did her best with him, up to and including helping him shop. The campaign's full extent: two large group encounters — the Moby concert in 2000, and a fashion party later that year — and never one proper dinner date. She married Ed Burns; he retired the quest.
