The Nobel Sustainability Trust — Zürich-based, chaired by Peter Nobel — holds an annual summit and awards. Jonathan Hare met Marcelo de Andrade at its 2024 summit (S-179), which the Trust's own page places in San Francisco, held together with UC Berkeley, in November 2024, with Ban Ki-moon among the speakers — Hare's 'UC Berkeley's giant hall,' two weeks after the 2024 election, at Ed Russo's table (S-141). The 2025 summit, documented on the Trust's page of 9 December 2025, was held on 5 December at the St. Regis Bal Harbour in Miami — 'a lot fancier,' in Hare's words — with Peter Nobel and Johan Rockström opening, Russo receiving the Special Recognition in Biodiversity Medal and giving a keynote on behalf of the President, medals to Qatari and Egyptian ministers, academic awards presented by the Technical University of Munich, and a new academic partnership with the University of Cambridge's Frontier Technology Lab. The next summit is planned for Doha. The Miami/Berkeley ambiguity the record carried from S-141 is settled: two summits, a year apart.
The Trust matters to the record as a room: the sustainability-finance network that runs through Marcelo, the academy and university network Hare notes it is building, and now the seat Russo holds in it. How Hare got in, and whom he met — his account (S-188). Peter Knez, who was to attend, arranged a courtesy VIP invitation for Karla Brollier and introduced Hare to the Trust's chief executive, Tracy J. Wang; when Karla went to Santa Fe instead, Hare took the slot, and got courtesy tickets for Jane Metcalfe and Iris Steine, neither of whom could make it. At the VIP table at the front he met the Nobel family — Peter, Erik, Stephanie and Johan Nobel — Yang Lan and Bruno Wang, Marcelo, Ed Barbier, Mathis Wackernagel, Emily Weeks, Ed Russo, Russell Le Page and many others — one of them a prince of Luxembourg, with whom he had a nice chat about shared descent from Charlemagne, William of Orange and Sir Oliver Cromwell.
