Born 1643, a schoolboy in Lincolnshire throughout Cromwell's protectorate; too young for the Civil War, and at Trinity College Cambridge from 1661, just after the Restoration.
The gravitation work belongs to the plague years of 1665–66, when Cambridge closed and he returned to Woolsthorpe. Oliver Cromwell had been dead seven years; Richard Cromwell was thirty-nine and in exile, and would outlive the publication of the Principia by twenty-five years.
Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.
The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.
Newton became Warden and then Master of the Royal Mint and treated it as an engineering problem rather than a sinecure. England's silver coinage was being clipped — shaved at the edges and the shavings kept — which drained value from every transaction and could not be detected after the fact.
His answer was not more enforcement. It was the milled edge: a fine reeding around the rim of every coin, so that a clipped coin was visibly, immediately, unarguably clipped. He also pursued counterfeiters with considerable ferocity, but the milling is the part that scales, because it does not depend on catching anyone.
He was also, throughout, an alchemist — which reads less oddly once you notice that transmutation and monetary reform are both questions about what makes a thing worth what it is worth.
Jonathan Hare has studied the history of notable scientists back to antiquity and feels a kinship with Newton specifically — a man who did the physics and then went and rebuilt the monetary protocol.
The connection through the family record is oblique and he says so: his ancestor's patronage helped shelter the men who founded the institution Newton would run. It is not a claim of influence. It is a claim about a recurring shape — temporary authority, an incubated network, and someone who eventually notices that money is an engineering problem.
