Index Ventures: the Rimer brothers, Giuseppe Zocco, and a royal chalet

Their first major technology financing was Evolve

About this entry

This is Jonathan Hare's account, with its provenance shown. The person or organization named has not yet claimed or corrected it.

Organization

What this is

Founded in Geneva in 1996 by Neil Rimer, David Rimer and Giuseppe Zocco. Its origins are in Index Securities, a Swiss bond-trading firm established by their father Gerald Rimer in 1976; Neil joined in 1992 to build the technology investment arm that became the venture firm. A third brother, Danny, joined later and opened the London office in 2002.

It is now among the largest venture firms in Europe — offices in London, San Francisco, New York, Geneva and Jersey, and assets of roughly €11.7 billion. David Rimer left in 2013 to become a high school history teacher and remains an adviser.

Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.

The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.

Evolve, and the European roadshow

Index led the $10m syndicated convertible note into Evolve Software — by Jonathan Hare's account one of their earliest major technology financings, with the introduction made by Bill Hambrecht.

They organized the European roadshow, working with Evolve's CFO Ralph Clark. One stop was a royal chalet in the Netherlands, lent by a descendant of the House of Orange who invested a million dollars of the round himself.
