Clipping worked because a shaved coin looked like a coin. Detection required weighing and comparison, which nobody does at the point of every transaction — so the loss was continuous, distributed, and effectively unpoliceable.
Newton's milled edge did not make clipping illegal. It was already illegal. It made clipping visible. A reeded rim is either intact or it is not, and the check costs nothing and requires no authority.
Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.
The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.
