An affinity, and a working example of coordination at scale

Jonathan Hare's interest in Rome is long-standing and predates any of this — the single recorded meeting with his grandfather has him, as a boy, reading a book of Roman history across the room while the old man watched.
It belongs in the record for a reason beyond the biographical. Rome is the longest-running demonstration in the Western record of coordination sustained across enormous distance and difference — law that traveled, citizenship that could be extended, roads and aqueducts and a currency that worked at the edges of the known world, and an administrative apparatus that outlived most of the men who ran it.
Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.
The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.
It failed the way every coordination system in this record fails: the guarantees lived in an authority rather than in the substrate. Roman law worked because Rome could enforce it. Roman currency held because Rome stood behind it — and when the standing weakened, successive emperors debased the coinage, which is clipping conducted from the top rather than the edges.
Charlemagne's coronation as emperor in 800 is the tell. Three centuries after the west fell, the most useful thing available was still the title — because the coordination it once denoted had no successor. Nobody had built the layer underneath.
That is the thread running from Rome to Newton's Mint to this architecture: every attempt to make coordination durable has placed the guarantee in a person, an office or a state, and every one has failed when that holder weakened.
