A fundraising stop, a fifteen-foot portrait, and the best claim to royalty Hare has
This is Jonathan Hare's account, with its provenance shown. The person or organization named has not yet claimed or corrected it.
A stop on the European roadshow Index Ventures organized for Evolve Software, at which roughly twenty prospective investors were hosted in a royal chalet in the Netherlands lent for the occasion by its owner — a legitimate descendant of the House of Orange.
The round was a $10m syndicated convertible note. The host invested $1m of it himself.
Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.
The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.
Jonathan Hare mentioned in his pitch that his family line ran back to Prince William of Orange. The host's response: “Oh, then we are family!” There was a fifteen-foot painting of the Prince on a rearing horse on the wall — comparable, Hare notes, to hanging on the same floor as The Night Watch at the Rijksmuseum.
They spoke alone afterwards; the host had wanted to meet him personally, as the main attraction of the evening. Hare said the descent was illegitimate. The host replied that he was in good company — that their ancestor had been very prolific when it came to reproduction.
Hare has always regarded this as his best claim to royalty: not a document, but a legitimate descendant standing under the portrait, saying we.
It is the only element of the family lineage that has ever been independently, if lightly, corroborated — and by someone with standing to know. Everything else rests on the Ledger.
It also has witnesses. Giuseppe Zocco of Index Ventures was on that segment of the roadshow, and probably David or Danny Rimer. Ralph Clark, then Evolve's chief financial officer, organized the roadshow with Index and was physically present. Hare told the story that evening and has told it ever since.
And the host's identity is recoverable. He invested a million dollars; Index Ventures will have his name in their records, and he was in all likelihood a client of Index Securities, the Rimer family's brokerage.
