James Bond keeps turning up in this record, and the record has stopped pretending otherwise

A fictional spy as recurring index: the car, the Caspian, the Scot at the BP table

About this entry

This is Jonathan Hare's account, with its provenance shown. The person or organization named has not yet claimed or corrected it.

Concept

What this is

The record does not usually carry fictional characters, but Bond earned the page by showing up at load-bearing moments. The Z8 that Steve Jobs outbid Jonathan Hare for was Bond's car in The World Is Not Enough — sawn in half by a helicopter-borne bandsaw in the Caspian oil fields off Baku. The BP executive across the dinner table in September 2000, John Leggate, had run BP's actual Baku operation until the year before, and the mutual love of Bond — a fellow Scot, as Leggate and one late-arriving branch of Hare's family both were — is what turned an executive sponsor into a guide. From that same conversation came the Scottish Enlightenment thread: the philosophers who shaped the Declaration, the Constitution, and the patent laws this whole architecture rests on.

So the page exists as an index entry: where Bond appears, follow the links, because something real was happening nearby.

What is missing, and how to fix it

This entry is deliberately incomplete. The gaps below are the things only certain people can settle — and settling one is a contribution like any other: recorded, timestamped and attributed to whoever made it.
