Anne Jonathan Hare — daughter of great-uncle Harold Hare, sister to Dodi and Helen — was the first of the family to reconnect with Hare's mother and the boys after Milton disappeared into Synanon: three or four years, by Hare's account, in which they had no idea where he was, after the visits to the Magic Forest stopped at puberty and his mother cut it off. Anne reopened the family.
The record opened three requests on this page on the morning of 25 August 2026; the Los Angeles Times archive settled them the same day. Anne Hare, 43, died alongside William Richards, 62, on July 12, 1987, when their vintage biplane crashed in mountainous Southern California — the Santa Clarita Valley / Newhall region. They were flying in formation with a companion aircraft, whose occupants witnessed the biplane go down; sheriff's search teams located the wreckage in a remote canyon. Both died on impact. (The correction is published alongside the original account rather than substituted: Hare's hedge was “1988 or so… over Santa Cruz or nearby” — the near-homophone Santa Clarita is exactly why this record hedges, requests, and documents rather than guessing. His recollection that the engine failed stands as his account of cause; the Times summary states none.) It was in the aftermath that Hare met Helen for the first time, flying with Dodi to Kettering, Ohio.
