Hare, Whitson, Wickwire — three families, three lineage records, one tradition

Not one book but three, each maintained by a different family line and each recording biological descent as far back as documents allowed.
Jonathan Hare — the paternal line, a family of missionaries and educators. Whitson — Bill Whitson's family, on the maternal side. Wickwire — Pauline Wickwire's line, Hare's maternal grandmother's family, also missionaries who circulated the globe for generations.
The Seventh-day Adventist practice resembles the Latter-day Saints' genealogical work in intent but differs in method: it is crowdsourced by each family rather than centralized. Individual families assemble written records and publish them as books roughly every generation, with each edition extending and correcting the last.
Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.
The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.
Three independent lines, three separately maintained records, no central authority, periodic versioned publication, correction propagating forward through editions, and validity resting on many parties having independently recorded the same thing.
Where the lines intersect — as they must, at every marriage — the three books check each other. That is a distributed ledger with cross-validation, run on paper and community discipline, for a century and a half.
Hare grew up inside it and did not think of it as a system until he had spent thirty years building another one.
At Charlemagne. Not because the descent ends there, but because the documents do — the Dark Ages are exactly that, a gap in the written record rather than in the biology.
The effect on a boy who read the books was specific and consequential: he grew up knowing his line ran back twelve hundred years, and knowing precisely where the knowing stopped. The rest he went and found in libraries.
