James Kaplan put me in front of forty CISOs — and the Aetna decade started in that room

Leader of McKinsey Technology; the 2013 drill-downs, the New Jersey summit, and the June 2026 reintroduction on Hare's birthday

About this entry

This is Jonathan Hare's account, with its provenance shown. The person or organization named has not yet claimed or corrected it.

Person

Who this is

James Kaplan — partner and leader of McKinsey Technology — enters the record in 2013, introduced by Thomas Dohrmann: a couple of technical drill-down sessions, and then the meeting that mattered, when Kaplan had Jonathan Hare present the Privacy and Trust Network to the CISOs of forty McKinsey clients and prospects at a two-day cybersecurity session in the firm's New Jersey office. Jim Routh of Aetna was in that room, and everything the record holds about the Aetna arc — the sponsorship, the Bertolini air-cover, the multi-year funded deployments with Experian Health, LexisNexis and the IRS — descends from it. Their last in-person meeting of that era was a FireEye executive briefing in Palo Alto hosted by Kevin Mandia, discussing Kaplan's own whitepaper on risk in a hyperconnected world.

The thread resumed in June 2026, when Marc Singer re-introduced them — neither Singer nor Kaplan, by Hare's account, recalling the 2008–2014 history until Hare restated it from the contemporaneous record now published as S-074. The meeting was set for June 15th, Hare's birthday, at ninety minutes rather than McKinsey's customary thirty — a scheduling doctrine with a track record, since the same birthday ask in 2017 produced the Sandell meeting that became the NEA investment.
