The account as dictated, preserved verbatim. Everything elsewhere on this site that derives from it is a distillation — and where the two differ, this governs.
Dictated by Jonathan Paul Hare in working sessions with Claude (Anthropic) and transcribed in-session. Lightly cleaned for typographic errors and false starts; wording, sequence and emphasis preserved. Not an audio transcript. Where the distilled page differs from the source, the source governs.
Sue Simon (Susan Simon) was a family friend through my grandmother June. According to June, she was a surrogate daughter to her and my grandfather in the 1970s - Sue spent "a month of Sundays" staying at my grandparent's weekend "Chestnut Cabin" at Scientists Cliffs. She worked for Shearson-Lehman American Express, and founded her own governmental affairs consultancy for investment firms tracking congressional bills and regulatory activity.
I got to know her well beginning in 1987 when I had a summer job at my Junior year at UC Berkeley in Washington DC at BDM International, which was a defense - intelligence consulting firm. I've stayed at her place in DC dozens of times, and when I lived in DC I lived near her place on Pennsylvania Avenue just across the Rockcreek Parkway bridge. She bought her own place at Scientists Cliffs near grandma's Chestnut Cabin (among my favorite spots in the world), and when I worked at Strategic Planning Associates in DC, we often spent weekends together down at Scientists Cliffs. I was actually closer to Sue Simon and my step-grandmother June than I was to my biological family, as our interests and lifestyles were much more aligned.
[LA Times archival research, pasted by Hare:] Anne Hare, 43, died alongside William Richards, 62, on July 12, 1987, when their vintage biplane crashed in a mountainous area of Southern California. The pair were flying a vintage biplane in formation with another aircraft over the rugged terrain of the Santa Clarita Valley / Newhall region. Occupants of the accompanying companion aircraft witnessed the biplane go down. Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies and search teams located the wreckage in a remote canyon, confirming that both Richards and Hare had suffered fatal injuries upon impact. Corrections applied downstream are recorded here rather than made silently. The source above is unaltered.
Two matters, both settling open items. First, Sue Simon — the Stage 1b flag asked whether she was Hare's mother, and the flag was right to ask rather than guess: she is a family friend through step-grandmother June Whitson, a surrogate daughter to June and William L. Whitson in the 1970s, and by Hare's account he was closer to Sue and June than to his biological family. New facts enter the record with her: the 1987 junior-year summer job at BDM International in Washington — a defense-intelligence consulting firm — and the identification of SPA, long cited in the MR-DIBS line, as Strategic Planning Associates of Washington DC. Second, Anne Hare: the Los Angeles Times archival report resolves all three requests opened on her page hours earlier — the date (July 12, 1987, not '1988 or so'), her companion's name (William Richards, 62), and the location, which corrects the author's hedge in exactly the way the hedge anticipated: Santa Clarita Valley / Newhall, Southern California — not Santa Cruz. The near-homophone is preserved as a worked example of why the record hedges and then documents rather than guessing. Hare's recollection of engine failure is retained at recorded grade as his account of cause; the Times summary as pasted does not state a cause. The correction is published on Anne's page alongside the original account, not substituted for it.
Each page below is a distillation of the account above. The chain is recorded in both directions so that a reader, a journalist or a future system can walk from a claim back to what was actually said.
A source record can be wrong about the world even when it accurately preserves what was said. Corrections are recorded alongside rather than replacing it — nothing here is overwritten.
