Sybase in Emeryville: where Consilient's database bench was forged

Mark Hoffman and Bob Epstein's company; Erik Freed architected the distributed database that never shipped

Organization

What this is

Sybase — Mark Hoffman and Bob Epstein's database company in Emeryville — is in this record as a talent forge: Erik Freed was the distribution architect of its next-generation distributed database, a product that never shipped and was named, in Jonathan Hare's recollection, for some classical-music thing he can no longer retrieve — the name is an open ask. Hare hired Freed at Evolve, and around him assembled what he rates the best technical talent pool of any of his companies: Rich Muth, Brian Anderson, Peter Wisnofsky and more, drawn from the East Bay database world that Sybase and the Berkeley Stonebraker lineage had trained.

This entry is deliberately incomplete. The gaps below are the things only certain people can settle — and settling one is a contribution like any other: recorded, timestamped and attributed to whoever made it.
