Finishing up the Dave Marquardt story. By the way, the lecture notes from this class became the basis for Andy Grove's book 'Only the Paranoid Survive', which is a great book which I relied upon. Anyway, so we had the sessions with Dave Marquardt. I gave this study everything about the networking industry. We got a great result on that thing and Wyc [transcribed as Whitfield Diffie] got what he wanted as a free ride off my work on the stuff. That's what got me into Microsoft. So, Dave Marquardt probably heard from Wyc or somebody that I was the smartest guy in Stanford Business School. And I said, 'Hey, you know, I want to go work for Microsoft in the summer doing networking stuff.' So, that happened. All these things happened behind the scenes, so I didn't know what was going on, but I'm assuming Dave Marquardt, or I don't know how it happened, or maybe I just applied for it and they hired me. But anyway, when I got to Microsoft for that summer job, I worked in Building 1. My next-door neighbor was Jim Allchin. He was the founder of Banyan Vines. So, that was a networking product that was the best decentralized, had the best network directory service. And so, he was hired as sort of the chief architect for Windows, what became Windows NT, or the next generation of Windows. So, I was in Building 1. My boss was effectively Steve Ballmer, although I had a boss who's a black dude. There's one guy, Matt Reagan, I think. So, he was my day-to-day boss. My real boss was some black dude who ran the Client Server Applications Group. So, that he was by the way like the only black guy I ever saw at Microsoft that wasn't serving food. He always wore a suit because he didn't want to be mistaken for a copier salesman or whatever, or actually a services guy. What was his name? Dwayne, I think. And anyway, so we had reseller deals. We resold Microsoft SQL Server was OEM version of Sybase SQL Server. We had partnerships with PeopleSoft, PowerSoft, you know, basically all the Client Server Apps groups, which was just starting to come to life. And one of them was by the way a company called Blyth Software with a product called Omnis. That's a totally separate or related story that I my next job after I turned down Microsoft because it was too easy. Anyway, that's how I got into Microsoft. And Dave Marquardt has been my mentor ever since. And another story I want to get in here related this was later after I the second year. I used to have lunch with Dave Marquardt every six months. Because he wanted to stay in touch with the best upcoming talent. So, he asked me, and this was the spring semester of my second year, I had a job to stay at Microsoft working for Darby Williams, who worked for what was his name? Rob Glaser. Or as Naren Nath called him, 'Rob fucking Glaser.' Apparently, he was not a nice guy to work for. But Rob Glaser actually founded RealNetworks. He was actually a very successful guy but a pain in the ass. So, it's basically for what became the internet superhighway play, because that's what people are talking about in those days. It was before the internet really took off, or they weren't routing IP in those days for some reason.
