Jonathan Hare knew Alan Baratz from his days running JavaSoft for Sun — the unit that carried Java — and the relationship survived Baratz's June 2000 appointment as CEO of FireDrop/Zaplet, the company positioned closest to Consilient's territory. They were seen as competitive and stayed friendly, which the record notes because it was rarer than it should have been in that market.
