The personal-genomics company co-founded by David Agus and Dietrich Stephan, offering clinician-mediated genome scans against the direct-to-consumer model of 23andMe; sold to Life Technologies in 2012 (web grade). In this record it is a room: where Agus introduced Jonathan Hare to Amy DuRoss, its chief business officer, and part of the world in which he met Sue Siegel.
The funding, two ways. Hare's recollection (S-191, hedged as given): originally co-funded by NEA and MDV, with one later buying the other's stake — because of a competing investment ('23andMe?') or a follow-on capital constraint. The documented press of 2009 names Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Mohr Davidow Ventures and Sequoia as its venture backers, and puts MDV in the 23andMe conversation of the same years. The NEA element is unconfirmed here — though NEA was MuleSoft's lead investor and Scott Sandell of NEA already stands in the Greg Schott pathway, so the memory may belong to that thread. Both versions stand; his correction, or anyone's who was in the room, is invited. 'It was all very incestuous in Silicon Valley, and still is.'
