With Whitfield Diffie, inventor of public-key cryptography — the 1976 result, recognized with the 2015 Turing Award, that solved a problem assumed insoluble: confidential communication between parties who have never met and share no secret.
In 2003, the year of the first mechanism filing, Hellman taught Jonathan Hare cryptography and invested in the company. His protégé Dan Boneh explained how cryptographers used the mathematics. That instruction is why, four years later, Hare could answer five doctorates' exploit questions without thinking. The relationship shaped the cryptographic direction of the work and a conviction that runs through the whole corpus: a problem widely assumed insoluble may simply be unsolved. EasyAccess Authorization is offered as the completion of the program Hellman began — public-key cryptography solved identity between parties; this claims to solve permission among them.

The investor relationship is documented at the dollar: his IRA wired $99,999.75 on May 17, 2006 for Series A Preferred of the original Resilient Networks, Inc. — 133,333 shares at $0.75, held through the markdown to $0.33 at year-end 2008 (S-126). Patient capital, practiced before it was doctrine.
