Jim Woodhill's house at 154 D Street: my roommates were Senator Pat Toomey and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan

One of Hare's oldest friends and the second patron in this record — whose Capitol Hill house held a future Senator and a future Speaker

About this entry

Parts of this entry are out of date. It is published anyway, because an incomplete record that invites correction is more useful than no record at all.

Person

Who this is

A long-standing friend and, like Pam Alexander, someone who simply made his life available. Jonathan Hare could stay at any of Woodhill's houses around the country.

One of them was the house at 154 D Street in south-east Washington, roughly a block and a half from the Capitol Hill Club and beside the Cannon House Office Building, where he rented rooms to congressmen — Pat Toomey, the future two-term Senator from Pennsylvania, and Paul Ryan, the future Speaker of the House, among them. (An earlier edition of this page compressed them into 'two future senators'; corrected per S-096, with the individual pages having had it right all along.)

S-094 places him at the origin of the coup chapter: freshly ousted from his own company, he suggested his brother Louis as Evolve's operating partner — the suggestion that led through Bix and a walk-in closet to Il Fornaio. The brothers' taste for shock humor is preserved in the record where it belongs: verbatim, in the episode.

Per S-113: an investor across four of Hare's ventures — Series A of Evolve Software; possibly Consilient (“maybe a nominal amount, like $5k” — the hedge is the author's and is kept); the original Resilient, with Matthew Spolin; and Resilient Network Systems.

The record

Where this intersects the work

Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.

The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.

2000s

The pattern this record keeps producing

Two patrons, independently, for years: Pam Alexander in Aspen, Tucson and Atlanta; Jim Woodhill's houses across the country. In both cases the arrangement was the same — get yourself there and everything else is covered.

A great deal of what this record documents happened because people with means decided, repeatedly and without being asked to, to share them with somebody who had none. That is not a moral about generosity. It is the observation that access of this kind is allocated by personal decision, and that almost nobody gets it.

There is no single root. This is one view of the graph, from this node — what you see depends on where you enter and what you are looking for.

Where this came from

Everything above is a distillation. The primary source is published in full, so that any claim on this page can be walked back to what was actually said — and where the two differ, the source governs.

What is missing, and how to fix it

This entry is deliberately incomplete. The gaps below are the things only certain people can settle — and settling one is a contribution like any other: recorded, timestamped and attributed to whoever made it.

If you were there

Correct anything wrong, add what only you know, or claim this entry as your own. Write to evidence@qpncatalyst.io and Jonathan directly (both are on the button) — a timestamped confirmation comes back with your submission attached, as your own independent record. No account, no permission, no institutional standing required.

Public contributions earn Publicity Premium; bringing others who were there earns Cascade Premium. Everything is valued retrospectively as outcomes verify, so nothing has to be priced up front.
