Paul Ryan and Pat Toomey were actually my roommates, who stayed at 54 D Street I think, whatever it was, in south-east Washington — about a block and a half from the Capitol Hill Club, which is where Republicans hide out, next to the Cannon House Office Building.
This is a house owned by my friend Jim Woodhill, one of my oldest friends. They both lived in rented rooms at Jim's place. Since Jim Woodhill was my patron and friend, I could stay at any of his houses around the country.
And part of my job was to kick Paul Ryan out of the master bedroom — because his family lived in Wisconsin, and to get a discounted rate he had to be just crashing there. So every time I came to town, I replaced him in the master bedroom. That way he wasn't actually occupying the master bedroom; he just stayed there when it was available. So my job was to kick him out when I came.
He actually tried to teach me how to work out. He had this P90X thing. He was the most in-shape guy I've ever seen in my life — I've seen him have to shower regularly because he was working out so hard. And then eventually he moved out. He just slept in his office, actually, before he became Speaker where he had a really big office. He used to sleep in his little office just to save money.

The transcription rendered Pat Toomey's name variously; both men are named correctly on the pages. Hare also alternates between ‘Paul’ and ‘Pat’ Ryan in speech; the housemate who took the master bedroom and later slept in his office is Paul Ryan.
One element is independently corroborated. Paul Ryan's practice of sleeping on a cot in his congressional office to avoid renting in Washington was well known and widely reported, continuing for roughly two decades. That supports the surrounding account of the housing arrangement.
The address is recalled approximately and is flagged as needing confirmation. Assessments of both men's politics and character are Hare's opinions and are marked as such; neither man's account is in this record.
