The account as dictated, preserved verbatim. Everything elsewhere on this site that derives from it is a distillation — and where the two differ, this governs.
Dictated by Jonathan Paul Hare in working sessions with Claude (Anthropic) and transcribed in-session. Lightly cleaned for typographic errors and false starts; wording, sequence and emphasis preserved. Not an audio transcript. Where the distilled page differs from the source, the source governs.
Doug Merritt is definitely a close friend and mentor - he was on my advisory board many times, I've been to his house many times, know both his wives, he was our champion at every company he was at up till Splunk.
Ray Lane was a friend / acquaintance who become a mentor and champion.
Dan Lynch was a social friend - probably had dinner or drinks with him a dozen times, either at SFI or at his place up in Napa Valley. He was friends with John Clippinger and a bunch of my other complexity buddies. He's hilarious.
Mitch Kapor i originally met when he was either still at Lotus in Massachusetts, Go Corp, or EFF (Electronic Frontiers Foundation), PC Forum or maybe Agenda (another tech conference). I met Mitch through Esther Dyson and a bunch of people - everyone knew Mitch. I later reconnected via James Joaquim (Zem Spire's husband) when he moved to the Bay Area and launched Kapor Capital, Kapor Foundation, and several others. I've been to his offices in SF and in Oakland probably a half dozen times.
[Research summary, pasted by Hare:] Mitch Kapor, alongside his wife Freada Kapor Klein, has launched venture and philanthropic organizations focused on diversity, tech equity, and social justice: Kapor Capital (impact venture, co-founded with Freada Kapor Klein); Kapor Enterprises Inc.; GO Corporation (pen-based computing, late 1980s); the Kapor Center in Oakland; the Mitchell Kapor Foundation (1997); SMASH (Summer Math and Science Honors); and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, co-founded in 1990 with John Perry Barlow and John Gilmore.
I met Ray Ozzie when he was running Lotus Notes division and also working on Lotus Improv - it was a Mitch Kapor intro, if I recall. Again, all the cool technologists knew Ray Ozzie - he was brilliant and innovative.
I met Ray again years later when became CTO of Microsoft - we met up in Redmond, just after he arrived. He was an excellent champion. Remind me to have Gemini search my old emails and files.

Five rulings, all executed. Doug Merritt: close friend and mentor — advisory boards many times over, both wives known, and champion at every company through Splunk. Ray Lane: a friend who became mentor and champion. Dan Lynch: social friend of the SFI-and-Napa dinners, connected to Clippinger and the complexity circle, and — the record preserves the grade — hilarious. Mitch Kapor: friend of long standing, met in the Lotus/GO/EFF era at PC Forum or possibly Agenda (the author's hedge is kept), through Esther Dyson among others; reconnected via James Joaquin when Kapor moved to the Bay Area; the organizations list enters at web grade as public-record fact. One new name enters the record in passing: Zem Spire, James Joaquin's wife — recorded exactly as stated, with no assumption about any relation to other Spires in the graph. Ray Ozzie: met running the Lotus Notes division while working on Improv, by a Kapor introduction ‘if I recall’ — hedge preserved; met again in Redmond just after he became Microsoft's CTO, and an excellent champion. Standing task queued at the author's request: run the Gemini archive miner across the old emails and files for the Ozzie and Kapor-era threads (PC Forum, Agenda, Lotus, Redmond). Still open from Stage 1b: iris-steine, Louis Woodhill, Ruth Parasol.
