Complex-adaptive-systems enthusiast via the Aspen Institute; Oracle's technical champions connected the dots; the deal-clout Hare was looking for
This is Jonathan Hare's account, with its provenance shown. The person or organization named has not yet claimed or corrected it.
Ray Lane — then President of Oracle, largely credited with driving its spectacular sales growth — reached Jonathan Hare through two channels at once: friends met at a Santa Fe Institute Board of Trustees meeting, and Oracle technical champions close to Lane who had been meeting with Hare and connected the dots, because Lane was a fan of complex adaptive systems theory, having encountered it at the Aspen Institute. The champions ran their diligence and then, exactly as they had warned they would, went radio silent for about two weeks. Then Lane himself reached out — with news rather than a term sheet: he had joined Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers as a partner, lured by his friends John Doerr, Brook Byers and Vinod Khosla.
The convergence is the story: Ajit Nazre, who had already done substantial diligence on Hare's company through the entirely separate Asera channel, joined KPCB at the same time. Two independent threads, one firm, one season. Lane had the clout to drive the spectacular deal Hare was looking for — and there the source record's account presently ends. What the deal discussion became is the page's standing ask, inherited from a dictation that has now cut off near this point twice.
