June's surrogate daughter — and the friend Hare was closer to than blood
Recalled but not checked against any source. Treat everything here as a first draft awaiting correction.
Susan “Sue” Simon entered the family through June Whitson: by June's account, a surrogate daughter to her and William L. Whitson in the 1970s, who spent “a month of Sundays” at the Chestnut Cabin at Scientists Cliffs. Professionally she ran Washington: Shearson-Lehman American Express, then her own governmental-affairs consultancy for investment firms, tracking congressional bills and regulatory activity.
Jonathan Hare got to know her well from 1987 — the junior-year summer he worked at BDM International, the defense-intelligence consulting firm in Washington — and the friendship became one of the fixed points of his life: dozens of stays at her place, his own DC apartment near hers on Pennsylvania Avenue just across the Rock Creek Parkway bridge, and, when she bought her own place at Scientists Cliffs near the Chestnut Cabin, weekends together there through the Strategic Planning Associates years. His own accounting, on the record: he was closer to Sue and June than to his biological family — the interests and the lifestyles aligned (S-111).
