Cassidy, Sandy, Ed Arkin and Zander — the Synanon family chapter, with its public documentation

The account as dictated, preserved verbatim. Everything elsewhere on this site that derives from it is a distillation — and where the two differ, this governs.

Recorded 2026-08-25Hare's message in the integrator thread, 25 August 2026, transcribed verbatim with spellings preserved. The first paragraph is his own account; the remainder is a research exchange he ran and pasted in, corroborating it against published sources. All sources
Provenance

Dictated by Jonathan Paul Hare in working sessions with Claude (Anthropic) and transcribed in-session. Lightly cleaned for typographic errors and false starts; wording, sequence and emphasis preserved. Not an audio transcript. Where the distilled page differs from the source, the source governs.

As dictated

Cassidy Arkin is my step-sister, the biological daughter of my step mother Sandy Rodgers Hare. As described in another record, she was one of the very first artificial insemination babies, because Sandy's partner at Synanon, before leaving after Cassidy was born. My father Milton Hare then became partners with Sandy, and left Synanon to move to San Leandro around 1981 or so. Milton became Cassidy's step-father when he married Sandy, and my brothers and I were step-brothers to Cassidy and a regular part of her life starting with she was about 4-5 years old, still in a crib. Cassidy later reconnected with Ed Arkin when she moved to NYC after graduating college, and they became close. Ed was sort of the black sheep member of a wealthy family, so there was tension with other members of the family who didn't completely welcome Cassidy as a family member. The exceprtion was Zander Arkin, who Cassidy introduced to me as her "Cousin" - a son of one of Ed Arkin's siblngs, presumably.

[Research exchange, pasted by Hare:] Who is Cassidy Arkin's father with the last name Arkin — the first name is Ed. As detailed in her memoir Little Brown Girl and the Paramount+ docuseries Born in Synanon, Ed Arkin was the partner of her mother, Sandra "Sandy" Rogers-Hare. The two met while participating in Synanon's group therapy circles known as "The Game". Following a cancer diagnosis and recovery for Ed, the couple decided they wanted children; unable to conceive naturally, Sandy turned to artificial insemination. Though not her biological father, Ed raised Cassidy inside the commune, and she grew up with his last name. Ed and Sandy committed their lives to Synanon, giving up their apartment and possessions, and Cassidy was raised in the communal child-rearing facilities — the "Hatchery" — until leaving the group in 1980. According to published accounts, Ed Arkin departed Synanon alone as the organization implemented mandatory partner swaps; Sandy subsequently partnered with fellow member Milton Hare, with whom she later left and married. Ed's family was deeply unhappy about him marrying a person of color, per the published interviews.

Editorial record

Two provenance grades in one record, and the reconciliation is the point. Hare's first paragraph is his own account, recorded grade: the step-relationship precisely stated (the site elsewhere calls Cassidy his sister, which remains his chosen word), the San Leandro move circa 1981, the New York reconnection, Zander introduced as “Cousin.” The research portion corroborates it against public documentation — Cassidy's memoir Little Brown Girl and the Paramount+ docuseries Born in Synanon (2023), which she executive-produced with Sandra Rogers-Hare, plus their CBS News pieces and press interviews — which upgrades the Synanon thread of this record to documented grade at its anchors: the Hatchery, the 1980 departure, Ed Arkin's role and name. Where the two diverge in emphasis (Hare: Ed left “after Cassidy was born”; published accounts: Ed departed alone amid Synanon's mandated partner swaps), both are preserved and neither is silently corrected. One identifier remains open and is requested on Zander Arkin's page: which of Ed's siblings is Zander's parent. Ruling executed: Cassidy — family circle; Zander — friends circle, family-adjacent through Cassidy; Ed Arkin enters the graph.
