Cassidy's original father — Synanon, the Hatchery, and the name she carries

Ed Arkin was Sandra Rogers-Jonathan Hare's partner at Synanon — they met in the 1960s in the community's group-therapy circles, “The Game.” After a cancer diagnosis and recovery, the couple decided to have children; unable to conceive naturally, Sandy turned to artificial insemination, which made Cassidy one of the very first artificial-insemination babies. Ed was not her biological father; he was her father — he raised her inside the commune, and she grew up with, and kept, his name. The couple committed their lives to Synanon, giving up their apartment and possessions, and Cassidy was raised in the Hatchery until the family's world came apart with the group.
Per the published accounts — Cassidy's memoir Little Brown Girl and the Paramount+ docuseries Born in Synanon — Ed departed Synanon alone as the organization imposed its mandated partner swaps; Sandy subsequently partnered with Milton Hare, left with Cassidy, and married him. In Hare's account, Ed was the black sheep of a wealthy family, and the family's incomplete welcome of Cassidy — the published interviews record their unhappiness that Ed had married a person of color — had one exception that mattered: Zander Arkin, who welcomed her as family. Cassidy reconnected with Ed after college, when she moved to New York, and they became close.

The Synanon thread of this record is unusual in carrying its own public documentation: Cassidy executive-produced Born in Synanon with her mother, and their CBS News reporting and interviews put the Hatchery, the 1980 departure, and Ed's role on the public record. Where Hare's account and the published accounts differ in emphasis — he recalls Ed leaving after Cassidy was born; the docuseries era's accounts describe Ed departing alone amid Synanon's mandated partner swaps — the record preserves both rather than silently choosing.
