Third floor of Etcheverry Hall, just north of Hearst. Nuclear engineers on the floor below, civil engineers above. Both called the IEOR floor the imaginary engineers, on the grounds that they designed systems rather than things — which is exactly the complaint, and exactly the point. Hare's focus was simulation and modeling of dynamic systems, which is the formal foundation everything else here rests on.
S-081 adds to the formation record: the daily instruments were APL and the high-level modeling languages of the period, which made linear algebra the working medium — a system's state as a vector, its evolution as repeated transformation, a change of basis as re-description. The covariance lesson — what changes under a change of coordinates was never a property of the system — was learned here as engineering practice, a decade before it was needed as architecture.
The formation's furthest downstream artifact to date: the unification essay, whose one mathematical object — the Hilbert space of chapter two — is the IEOR training applied to the oldest questions there are.
