The Operations Research Office at Johns Hopkins, which did tactical and strategic analysis for the Defense Department through the 1950s. William L. Whitson was its deputy director from 1950.
By family account, the strategy that became Mutual Assured Destruction was devised there under his direction. The discipline itself — operations research — is the one whose American society he went on to found, and the one Jonathan Hare read at Berkeley thirty years later.
