The practical discipline the Wall Street Journal Test produces: publish the record including what went wrong, with provenance attached, before anyone else constructs a version of it.
It is also a defensive mechanism. When a visible cascade arrives, accounts multiply — people misremember, people seek advantage by affiliation, and people invent. A dated record made before there was anything to be strategic about is the only reliable answer to an account produced afterwards.
