At the first All Things Digital conference in 2003, Jonathan Hare found Marissa Mayer — Google's first female engineer, then completely unknown — staffing a modest booth in the antechamber, and they talked uninterrupted for half an hour, which in that room was a small miracle. Inside the conversation sat the flashback the record enjoys: Hare mentioned discussing Google's strategy for an hour with Eric Schmidt in February 2001 at Tim O'Reilly and John Battelle's Peer-to-Peer conference — where Schmidt confided he was weighing the Chairman role and asked what the optimal business model for a search engine might be. He joined Google weeks later.
