inBloom — the multi-hundred-million-dollar K-12 data initiative — collapsed in 2014 over exactly the privacy failure this record's architecture addresses. Jonathan Hare treated it as a salvage operation: teaming with inBloom's CEO Iwan Streichenberger and Chief Privacy Officer Ginny Bartlett, the open-source assets were re-architected onto WebShield's distributed trust model with students and parents in absolute control, using the IRS-grade cryptographic verification of parent-child relationships to solve the COPPA and FERPA conflicts that had destroyed the original. (Whether that verification system was built at Resilient or in the WebShield era is a flagged conflict awaiting Hare's ruling — S-100.) A famous failure, salvaged into the architecture's education thread.
S-101 supplies the launch-side detail: Hare was at the March 2013 SXSW EDU launch in Austin at the invitation of the Gates Foundation's education leadership — Stephen Coller and Brandt Redd — for the $100M+ initiative funded by Gates, the Carnegie Corporation and News Corp, in collaboration with the CCSSO and the Department of Education. He watched the poster child of privacy failure from the front row before salvaging its parts.
