Arguably the most accomplished of the three Haseltines by the measure that counts most: she forced clinical research to include women as subjects.

Neither brother introduced them. Jonathan Hare met her independently through mutual friends at the NIH, and she became the closest of the three — which says something about how networks actually work: the most valuable connection in a family was not offered by either person who could have offered it. When he was poor he stayed at her apartment, with her and her husband the physicist Alan Chodos, many times.
