Eric Beinhocker enters the record twice before the record knew it needed him. Jonathan Hare knew him slightly from the Santa Fe Institute — the coffee-room corridor again — and in December 2006 Lenny Mendonca proposed him for the E.O. Wilson Foundation's Consilience Initiative, with Jay Short seeing the fit immediately. The fit was structural: Beinhocker's The Origin of Wealth, just published under the McKinsey Global Institute's imprint (the 2006 email links its MGI page), argued that economics is an evolutionary, complex adaptive system — which is the Consilience thesis stated for the one domain the architecture most needed it stated for.
His arc since completes the alignment: Executive Director of the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School — INET Oxford, the research institute founded with George Soros's backing — and Professor of Public Policy Practice at Oxford's Blavatnik School. The man Mendonca proposed in 2006 for the consilience of economics now runs an Oxford institute whose founding purpose is the reform of economic thinking. Hare's present note, recorded as his: Beinhocker and David Agus sit at opposite ends of the political spectrum's funding map — Soros's institute and Ellison's — and both are aligned with the mission of the Consilient Nature and Humanity Trust, which is itself the point: the mission is the consilience, not the politics.
