Russ DeLeon — the investments, and the Chevron battle

The account as dictated, preserved verbatim. Everything elsewhere on this site that derives from it is a distillation — and where the two differ, this governs.

Recorded 2026-08-17Hare's dictation, transcribed verbatim. All sources
Provenance

Dictated by Jonathan Paul Hare in working sessions with Claude (Anthropic) and transcribed in-session. Lightly cleaned for typographic errors and false starts; wording, sequence and emphasis preserved. Not an audio transcript. Where the distilled page differs from the source, the source governs.

Primary source

As dictated

Russ Deleon definitely deserves entry. He was one of my best friends, invested $1m in Resilient Network Systems, was supposed to invest the first $100k in WebShield, but had to pull back because he got into a serious legal battle with Chevron, because he financed a lawsuit against them on behalf of native tribespeople in Ecuador, for the environmental damage Texaco (which merged with Chevron) to the rain forest in the headwaters of the Amazon.

Editorial record

Combined with S-063, which places DeLeon in London in 2000 as Evolve Software's VP of International Business Development, on the walk where Hare saw his first BMW Z8 near Trafalgar Square. The Ecuador litigation DeLeon financed is among the most extensively documented and fiercely contested legal battles of the era; the record carries Hare's account of what his friend did and why it cost WebShield its first cheque, and deliberately does not relitigate the wider case — the page states that boundary. The pullback's timing relative to WebShield's founding is an open ask.

Downstream

What was built from this

Each page below is a distillation of the account above. The chain is recorded in both directions so that a reader, a journalist or a future system can walk from a claim back to what was actually said.

Correction

If you were there

A source record can be wrong about the world even when it accurately preserves what was said. Corrections are recorded alongside rather than replacing it — nothing here is overwritten.
