Almost everything here was spoken aloud, in one pass, without notes. Jonathan Jonathan Hare dictated into a microphone, did not look anything up, did not consult his files, and did not search for confirmation before speaking. The transcripts are preserved verbatim in the source records, disfluencies and all.
It is non-linear because memory is non-linear, and because a graph has no natural order. It arrived in layers, doubling back, correcting itself, with the same story told twice from different angles.
Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.
The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.
A name recalled unprompted after twenty-five years — Cindy Zollinger, the associate from Brown who kicked him under the table, the concierge at the restaurant behind Davies Symphony Hall — proves it was retrieved often enough over decades to survive at all. Memory is use-dependent. What is never rehearsed is lost.
That is precisely what a fabricated record cannot produce. An account assembled by asking an AI to research a life would be smoother, better dated, and worth nothing as testimony, because the machine would be the source rather than the man. The roughness is the proof of authorship.
It is also efficient. Thirty years of relationships and arguments went down in days rather than years, which is the only reason there is anything here to correct.
Some of it is wrong. Names were misspelled and later fixed. Two term sheets were reversed. A date was compressed by a thousand years. A textbook was misattributed until Hare checked his own recollection and corrected it himself.
Every one of those corrections is published rather than applied silently, because the correction record is more valuable than the appearance of having been right. This is not a document that claims accuracy. It is a structure designed to converge on it.
The point of publishing something unfinished is that other people can finish it. Like an encyclopedia, the goal is not perfection at the outset but enough structure that contributions have somewhere to attach.
Which requires giving people permission. A family oral tradition is meaningful and true in its context, in the way that religious traditions are — mostly myth and legend over a fragmentary historical base, and carrying real information about the people who transmitted them. Nobody should withhold what they remember because they cannot prove all of it.
Send what you have. It will be graded honestly, recorded with your name, and left for the next person to correct.
