1648: modern diplomacy's birth certificate, the essay's chapter-ten hinge — the empire of one ancestor, the republic of another
This is Jonathan Hare's account, with its provenance shown. The person or organization named has not yet claimed or corrected it.
The Peace of Westphalia, 1648, ended the Thirty Years War inside the Holy Roman Empire and the Eighty Years' War between Spain and the Dutch Republic — and it did so, as chapter ten of the unification essay argues, not by settling a single point of theology but by changing the coordination architecture: each territory its own confession, sovereign questions handled by protocols that did not require agreement about God. It is the birth certificate of modern diplomacy and of religious tolerance's first durable form — at least, as Jonathan Hare notes, between the Catholics and the Protestants — along with its limit: it protected descriptions by trapping the describers inside borders.
This record's Burke-style addendum, and the reason this page sits in a personal graph at all: both wars are family. The empire was founded by Charlemagne, Hare's ancestor per the family ledger; the republic by William of Orange the Silent, his ancestor by a direct albeit illegitimate line — both descents kept in the family's paper blockchain. The treaty that first built what the architecture now finishes sits, genealogically, at the join of the essayist's own tree — a coincidence the record labels honestly as coincidence, and enjoys anyway.
There is no single root. This is one view of the graph, from this node — what you see depends on where you enter and what you are looking for.

This record is not biography attached to a technical claim. Each runs into the other: the experiences below produced the mechanisms, and the mechanisms are what those experiences turned out to require.
This page is the anecdote — the thing that draws you in. The explainers are where the mechanism is set out in full, with the problem it solves and the condition on which it fails.
