VP of Marketing & Software Alliances at Consilient; negotiated the BP safety-incident deal in London, September 2000. Her LinkedIn still lists BP as the marquee account.
This is Jonathan Hare's account, with its provenance shown. The person or organization named has not yet claimed or corrected it.
Sandra Smith was Consilient's VP of Marketing & Software Alliances from May 2000 to October 2001, and the operator half of the BP relationship: Jonathan Hare opened the doors, and her job — in his words from the source record — was to turn his relationships into paying deals. She was with him in London in September 2000 for the negotiation of Consilient's first major BP deal, and she negotiated the first big contract — $1.5 million for the offshore safety-incident application, with a $10 million BP pipeline in development behind it. At the group dinner, Hare signaled her across the table to move seats and sit beside John Leggate. What happened instead is the vignette below, and she was right.
Her own published record independently corroborates all of it: her LinkedIn lists 'Established British Petroleum as marquee customer account' at Consilient in exactly that window, along with the SAIC partnership and the product launch. Where this record and her account can be checked against each other, they agree — which is the standard the whole site aspires to.
Her career after Consilient is its own story, documented in her own words: a decade as producer at Wild West Productions — Vince Vaughn's company — from the 30-city comedy tour to Couples Retreat to The Internship, where she managed a Google partnership valued at over $15 million; then co-founder of Immersive Systems (Techstars, two U.S. patents). The Consilient diaspora went interesting places, and hers ran through Hollywood.
And the second thread that makes her a hub in this graph: her best friend was Victoria Vaughn — Vince Vaughn's sister. The three of them socialized through the Consilient years, which is how, when Sandra moved to LA, the best friend's brother's production company became a decade of her career. The record notes the mechanism because the record is the same mechanism: relationships compound, and the graph records the compounding.
Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.
The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.
The trip that made the account: Leggate as executive sponsor, the group dinner and the seat-change signal, Browne's instruction to meet Hayward, and the negotiation Sandra ran to closure — a seven-figure application whose purpose was reliable recording of minor safety incidents on offshore platforms, using Consilient sitelets as self-contained asynchronous agents that worked without connectivity and routed by email when a connection appeared. The rest of that application's story, and its terrible irony, is on the Hayward page.
Hare signaled from across the table: move over, sit with me and Leggate on the executive side. Sandra steadfastly ignored him and sat directly opposite Leggate instead — and then spent the rest of the trip at BP headquarters with Leggate's team while Hare was off with Hayward, Browne and other customers, so he never got to ask why. He asked her good friend Mary instead, an accomplished enterprise-software account rep, and got the verdict verbatim: 'Jonathan — you're so innocent. In the software industry, tits sell, dicks buy. Just let her close the deal.' When she put it that way, he understood completely. And Sandra closed it: $1.5 million on the one deal, ten in the pipeline. The record publishes Mary's line as Mary's line — crude, cynical about an industry that earned the cynicism, and, on the evidence, operationally correct.
