Margaret ‘Maggie’ Whitson met Elvis in Heidelberg — and Bavarian aristocrats duelled over her

Hare's mother: born Maryland 1943, the classified official's daughter in the seized mansion, chaperoned through a cinematic era; later Margaret Whitson again, now married to John Crowley

Person

Who this is

Margaret ‘Maggie’ Ina Whitson — Jonathan Hare's mother — was born in Maryland on January 10, 1943, and her girlhood chapter is the record's most cinematic: crossing the Atlantic around 1957–58 on the Cristoforo Colombo (the Andrea Doria's famous sister ship) with her stepmother June to join her father William L. Whitson in Heidelberg, living in a palatial mansion seized from German nobility at the headquarters of US Army Europe, meeting Elvis Presley at a military mixer during his Friedberg posting — her absolute celebrity crush, well into her late twenties — and watching the young Bavarian nobility fight ritual Mensur duels with sharpened Schläger for her attention, entirely innocent of the blood sport, chaperoned always by June. The full chapter is The Heidelberg years.

The record already knew her second spiritual campus — the Ouija board kept on principle, the belief in everything good and spiritual, the ex-wife's testimony that demolished Milton's excommunication claim with the efficiency available only to ex-wives. Now it has her beginning too. After the divorce she reverted to Margaret Whitson, and when Jonathan was around twenty she married John Crowley, about six years her junior. She raised her son in a converted chicken coop previously occupied by nice witches, and made him dust the Ouija board. The record considers itself lucky in its cast.
