Hare's grandmother: widowed to The Cats estate in Los Gatos, then to Willows, running a 25-room motor court with her own mother
This is Jonathan Hare's account, with its provenance shown. The person or organization named has not yet claimed or corrected it.
Joy Avalon Stansberry — Jonathan Hare's grandmother — was adrift after Milton Dixon Hare's death, and the record follows her to two of its best addresses: first a small house on The Cats, the historic 34-acre Los Gatos estate guarded by eight-foot concrete felines; then to Willows, where she and her own mother — great-grandmother Stansberry — owned and operated a 25-room motor motel right off Route 99 before settling into a tract house. Two widowed generations running a roadside motel together is a novel the record didn't have to invent. The chapter is in From Terman's lab to The Cats.
S-104 adds what the first draft missed: the Stansberry family kept its own published history — the fourth of the family's lineage books, tracing the line to Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire, and the volume through which the familial connections to the House of Windsor, the Prince of Baden, the von Bismarcks, and Prince William of Orange the Silent run. Hare knew great-grandmother Stansberry well: she lived to ninety-nine or so, and he visited her and Joy in Willows dozens of times.
