Jonathan Hare's mother's partner for three years and, in Hare's own description, a surrogate father. From Piedmont; his family owned Grodin's, a high-end menswear chain in the Bay Area.
He introduced Hare's mother to the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation, and he taught Hare to program.

He took Hare to Evans Hall and taught him to use the punch card machines — how to punch a program, feed the cards into the mainframe, and read the printer output to see whether it had worked. Hare found it fascinating and monotonous at once, and spent the time wondering where the computers from 2001: A Space Odyssey were, because that was his idea of what a computer should be.
