Jonathan Hare's first professional work, taken as an undergraduate after his sophomore year at Berkeley: safety systems software for the nuclear power industry, including fire suppression controls, developed into a new vertical business line.
He took it deliberately, on the view that nuclear was the most sustainable energy then available — a position well outside environmental orthodoxy at the time and largely adopted by it since. The grid knowledge from the USC summer program was directly useful.
Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.
The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.
The AI build is usually discussed in terms of silicon — Nvidia, TSMC. The binding constraint is power, and Moore's law is far weaker in energy than in transistors. The United States led the world in nuclear power and energy systems when Hare started in it.
