The maritime branch of scouting, training future merchant mariners and naval officers. Jonathan Hare joined at twelve — a couple of years under the minimum, and the youngest member the program had taken.
It ran like the navy: saluting, presenting arms, marching in formation. He learned to navigate in a pre-GPS age — radio direction finding, LORAN, and sextant work at night by tracking the sun's arc against an accurate clock.
